Traders Warn of Severe Impact Following Burkina Faso Tomato Export Ban

The Tomato Traders Association of Ghana has raised concerns over Burkina Faso’s decision to halt the export of fresh tomatoes, warning that the situation could have serious consequences if swift action is not taken.

According to the association’s chairman, the ban poses a major threat to both traders and consumers, as tomatoes are a staple in many Ghanaian meals. He cautioned that even a short disruption in supply could lead to shortages and increased prices in the market.

The chairman also highlighted ongoing challenges faced by traders, particularly the lack of proper storage facilities, which often leads to significant losses. With traders relying on peak periods like Easter to make profits, the ban is expected to further strain their businesses.

He noted that Ghana heavily depends on Burkina Faso for tomato imports, making the restriction especially worrying. Although discussions had previously been held with Burkinabe officials, the sudden implementation of the ban has left traders unprepared.

The association is therefore calling on the government to urgently engage Burkina Faso to help resolve the issue or at least allow time for traders to adjust. Meanwhile, authorities in Ghana have indicated plans to initiate dialogue to protect supply and maintain trade relations.
