Minority Leader Demands Accountability from Anti-Flooding Taskforce

The Minority Leader in Parliament has called on the government’s anti-flooding taskforce to present a detailed report on its activities and impact, amid continued flooding in several parts of the country.

According to him, the taskforce, which was constituted at the highest levels of government and widely publicized as a decisive solution to Ghana’s perennial flooding problem, has yet to demonstrate tangible results.

This was a body assembled from the very top of Ghana’s executive machinery, announced to the public as a decisive intervention against perennial national problems. And yet we are here,” he stated.

He lamented that the situation on the ground remains unchanged, with communities still experiencing flooding and its associated hardships. He further stressed the need for transparency, insisting that Ghanaians deserve to know what the taskforce has achieved since its formation.

“They were promised to make a difference. And I believe that they are owed a transparent account of what it actually did,” he emphasized.

Responding to the concerns, the Majority Leader acknowledged the existence of the taskforce but urged patience, noting that resolving flooding challenges is a complex and long-term undertaking.

“I’ve read about the special task force that was set up by the President. I’m not sure that this is a problem that can be solved within the one year that I think the task force has been in existence,” he said.

He explained that addressing flooding effectively requires extensive studies and significant financial resources.

“A lot of studies are required, a lot of fundraising is required, and I believe that they will ultimately achieve some success, but we need to give them time,” he added.

The exchange highlights growing debate within Parliament over the effectiveness and pace of government interventions aimed at addressing Ghana’s persistent flooding challenges.
