Lambussie District to Receive 10,000 Poultry Birds Under Akoko Nkitinkiti Programme

The Lambussie District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Nathaniel Zimmeeweh Nambie, has announced that 10,000 poultry birds have been dispatched to the district under the government’s Akoko Nkitinkiti programme and are expected to arrive on October 19, 2026, or the following day.

Speaking in a one-on-one interview with Jonah Mampong on Lambussie 97.7 FM on October 18, 2026, Mr. Nambie said the district had not received its share of the birds since the programme commenced, dismissing claims that the birds had been delivered to the district and subsequently sold.

According to him, the birds have now been dispatched, and the Department of Agriculture will make an official announcement once they are received.

“10,000 birds have been dispatched to Lambussie District as its share of the Akoko Nkitinkiti programme and are expected to arrive this evening or tomorrow, October 19, 2026. When we take delivery of them, we will make it public for everyone to know,” he said.

The Akoko Nkitinkiti programme is a flagship government initiative aimed at revitalising Ghana’s poultry industry and strengthening food sovereignty through the distribution of three million poultry birds to households across the country.

Launched in Kumasi on November 13, 2025, under the Feed Ghana Programme, the initiative seeks to increase local poultry production and reduce Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported frozen chicken.

Mr. Nambie explained that each beneficiary household was initially expected to receive approximately 50 birds to rear, although the number could be reduced to enable more households to benefit from the programme.

He said the initiative was open to everyone, particularly farmers, but indicated that special consideration would be given to vulnerable groups, including widows, women, young people and young household heads.

The District Director emphasised that the selection and distribution process would be handled by the Department of Agriculture, which is also responsible for monitoring, supervising and providing technical advice to beneficiary farmers to ensure the birds are properly reared.

Responding to concerns about whether the programme was intended exclusively for members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Nambie rejected the suggestion that it was a party-based initiative.

“If it is for NDC people, then it should have been channelled through the party chairman and not the Department of Agriculture,” he stated.

His remarks underscored the department’s position that the programme is a government agricultural intervention intended to support eligible households and farmers, rather than a political party’s membership scheme.

The expected arrival of the 10,000 birds is anticipated to provide an opportunity for poultry farmers and selected households in the Lambussie District to participate in local poultry production.

The programme’s broader objective is to strengthen domestic poultry production, improve household livelihoods and reduce the country’s reliance on imported frozen chicken.

Mr. Nambie assured the public that the district would announce the arrival of the birds once delivery had been completed, adding that the Department of Agriculture would oversee their distribution and provide the necessary technical support to beneficiaries.
