Media, Youth Representatives Urged to Deepen Public Understanding of Constitutional Reform

The Vice Chairman of the Citizens Platform on Constitutional Review, Alhassan Mohammed Awal, has called on media practitioners to show greater interest in Ghana’s constitutional reform process and help deepen public understanding of the proposed reforms.

He made the call during a training session for media practitioners and youth group representatives aimed at strengthening their understanding of constitutional reform issues and promoting informed and accurate media coverage of the process.

The training took place at the Modern City Hotel in Tamale on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, and was organised by the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Centre (NORSAAC).

Mr. Awal, who is also the Co-Founder and Executive Director of NORSAAC, stressed the need for broad and effective public consultations to ensure the success of the constitutional reform process.

He noted that the current process represents the third attempt to amend Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and urged the government to engage citizens and relevant stakeholders meaningfully to build consensus around the proposed reforms.

According to him, the Constitutional Review Committee made 147 recommendations, 100 of which were rejected in the government’s position paper, making it important for citizens to understand the issues and actively participate in discussions surrounding the reforms.

Mr. Awal further emphasised the role of the Citizens Platform on Constitutional Review in ensuring that the interests and concerns of citizens are adequately considered in the review process.

Participants at the training were media practitioners and youth representatives drawn from the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Savannah and North East regions.

The training sought to strengthen participants’ knowledge of constitutional reform issues and improve the quality of public engagement and media reporting on the ongoing process.
