The Wa East District has commemorated this year’s World Day Against Child Labour with a strong call for collective action to protect children and promote their rights. The event, held at Bulenga under the theme “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults,” also featured the inauguration of the Wa East Children’s Parliament.
The Children’s Parliament, made up of 50 children from across the district, is expected to serve as a platform for amplifying the voices of young people and advocating for their rights and well-being.
The programme was organised by World Vision in partnership with the Wa East District Assembly and brought together key stakeholders in education, child protection, and community development.
Addressing the gathering, the District Chief Executive for Wa East, Mr. Adamu Sayibu, underscored the importance of safeguarding the future of children. He noted that every child deserves a safe environment, access to quality education, and the opportunity to reach his or her full potential. He urged the newly inaugurated child Parliamentarians to take up the responsibility of becoming ambassadors for education, child protection, and positive change in their communities.
“The future leaders of Wa East and Ghana are among you,” he stated, encouraging the children to use their platform to inspire meaningful transformation.

The District Director for Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Clement Mol, emphasized that child protection is a shared responsibility. He called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to identify children at risk, support vulnerable households, and ensure that every child remains in school and is shielded from harmful practices.
Also speaking at the event, the Wa East District Director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Yahaya Mumuni Abdul-Raman, commended World Vision for initiating the Children’s Parliament, describing it as a significant step toward empowering children. He further disclosed that the government’s Free Sanitary Pad Policy, launched in 2025 by the President of Ghana, has already been extended to basic schools in the district, with Wa East receiving its share of the distribution.
The event reaffirmed the district’s commitment to eliminating child labour and promoting the welfare and development of children through education, protection, and inclusive participation.
