Bekwai Court Sentences Mine Worker to 14 Years for Defiling 8-Year-Old Girl

The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced a 30-year-old mine worker, Atta Kwadwo, to 14 years in prison for defiling an eight-year-old girl at Manso Kumpese in the Ashanti Region.

Kwadwo was convicted of defilement of a child under 16, an offence punishable under Section 101 of the Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29), as amended by Section 11 of Act 554.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at about 6 p.m. on July 10, 2026, when the convict allegedly approached the girl near a bathhouse. He reportedly lived in the same compound as the victim and her family.

The court heard that the girl’s mother became worried after her daughter spent an unusually long time in the bathroom and went to check on her. Upon reaching the scene, she found Kwadwo sexually assaulting the child and raised an alarm, attracting the attention of her husband, who rushed to the location.

Kwadwo was subsequently arrested and handed over to the Adubia Police for investigation.

The prosecution further told the court that a medical examination conducted at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital in Agroyesum revealed mild bleeding and lacerations. A medical form was issued to facilitate the examination.

During investigations, Kwadwo denied committing the offence in his caution statement. However, after completing its investigations, the police charged him and commenced prosecution.

The court, presided over by His Honour Isaac Appiatu, found Kwadwo guilty and sentenced him to 14 years’ imprisonment.
