A political commentator, Mr. Halidu Tahiru, has dismissed ongoing claims that President John Dramani Mahama is seeking a third term in office, stating that the President has consistently maintained his commitment to Ghana’s constitutional provisions.
Speaking in an interview with James Baba Anabiga, host of the Day Break Upper West morning show on Lambussie FM, Mr. Tahiru expressed confidence in President Mahama’s position, noting that there is no indication of any attempt to extend his tenure beyond the constitutionally allowed limit.
“I trust President Mahama will go by his own words that he is not seeking a third term in office,” he stated.
Mr. Tahiru suggested that concerns being raised by members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are largely driven by political apprehension rather than evidence. According to him, the opposition fears that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which currently holds a majority in Parliament, could push for constitutional changes.
“The opposition NPP is very afraid that Mahama will use the NDC Majority in Parliament to secure a third term,” he said.
However, he emphasized that President Mahama has not made any public statement suggesting an intention to pursue an additional term beyond his current mandate. Instead, Mr. Tahira noted that the President has repeatedly indicated his focus on delivering on his promises to Ghanaians.
“President Mahama has not indicated anywhere that he is interested in a third tenure. He has stated publicly in recent times that he is concentrating on the additional one-term mandate given to him by the good people of Ghana and to fulfill his promises and not another term in office,” he added.
Mr. Tahiru further pointed out that calls for a possible extension of President Mahama’s leadership are coming from sections of the public who believe he deserves more time due to his performance in office.
“It is some Ghanaians who think that President Mahama deserves another term because of the good works he is doing,” he explained.
