The West African Examinations Council has officially released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates, marking a significant moment for thousands of final-year Junior High School students across Ghana, including those in the Upper West Region and the Lambussie District.
According to a press statement issued on July 29, 2026, the Council announced that a total of 620,243 candidates sat for the examination nationwide. This figure comprises 304,415 males and 315,828 females from 20,789 schools, reflecting a continued high level of participation in basic education across the country.
In the Upper West Region, where education access remains a key development priority, thousands of candidates participated in the exams. Earlier data from WAEC indicates that 14,928 candidates from 628 schools in the region registered for the 2026 BECE, writing at 51 centres .
For districts such as Lambussie, the release of results is particularly crucial, as it determines placement into Senior High Schools and shapes the academic future of many young learners. Education stakeholders in the district are expected to closely monitor performance trends and outcomes to guide interventions aimed at improving quality education.
The Council revealed that the examination was conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide, ensuring accessibility across regions. Out of the total number of candidates, 3,601 were absent.
The results have been dispatched to schools through the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education. Candidates can also access their results online via the WAEC portal.
WAEC reported several cases of examination irregularities following investigations. The Council announced the following sanctions:
Cancellation of subject results for 496 candidates
Cancellation of entire results for 105 candidates
Withholding of subject results for 119 candidates
In addition, the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld pending further investigation. These results may either be released or cancelled after the review process, which is expected to conclude by August 31, 2026.
Such measures are consistent with WAEC’s efforts to maintain the integrity of public examinations, as similar actions have been taken in previous years to address malpractice cases .
