Man jailed four years for threatening to stab mother

The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 26-year-old unemployed man, Joseph Quaye, to four years in prison for threatening to stab his mother with a knife and scissors.

Quaye pleaded guilty to the charge of threat of death and was convicted on his own plea by the presiding judge, Bernice Mensima Ackon.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Veronica Tibson, who prosecuted the case, told the court that the complainant, Afua Adenzie, a trader and mother of Quaye, resides at Ningo, near Benso in the Western Region.

According to the prosecution, Quaye had been having disagreements with his mother for some time and had on several occasions threatened to assault her.

ASP Tibson said that at about 7:00 p.m. on June 12, 2026, the complainant was at home when Quaye arrived.

She explained that Adenzie noticed an offensive smell from her son and advised him to take a proper bath.

The advice reportedly angered Quaye, who began arguing with his mother and subjected her to insults, including calling her a prostitute and making other offensive remarks about her.

The prosecution said Quaye subsequently pulled a pair of scissors from his pocket and threatened to stab his mother. The complainant reportedly pleaded with him to spare her life.

ASP Tibson told the court that around 2:00 a.m. on June 13, 2026, Quaye returned to the house while his mother and other siblings were asleep and again threatened her, this time with a knife.

He allegedly told his mother that if he had a gun, he would have shot her in the ribs. The threat was reportedly made in the presence of his senior brother, who witnessed the incident.

The court heard that Quaye was later arrested at the Benso Police Station in connection with an alleged stolen gun case.

Upon learning of his arrest, the complainant went to the police station and formally reported the threats against her.

Following his guilty plea, the court convicted Quaye and sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment in hard labour.
