President Mahama Directs a Reduction in Fuel Prices in Response to Earlier Calls for Fuel Tax Relief

The Government of Ghana, under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, has announced a reduction in the price of diesel by GH¢2.00 per litre, a move aimed at easing economic pressures on consumers and transport operators.

In a statement issued by the Presidency Communications Office and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the directive follows a Cabinet decision and mirrors a similar intervention implemented earlier in April 2026. The reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel is expected to take effect from Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and will remain in place for one month.

According to the statement, the temporary measure is intended to cushion consumers, prevent anticipated increases in transport fares, control inflationary pressures, and reduce the overall cost of living. Government further assured that it will continue to monitor developments in the global energy market and implement additional policies where necessary to protect citizens and sustain economic recovery.

The latest intervention appears to align with concerns previously raised by Abubakari Abdul-Moomin during a discussion on Lambussie FM. Mr. Abdul-Moomin had earlier called on government to remove the GH¢1.00 tax imposed on every litre of fuel, arguing that such a move would ease pressure on private transport operators who were considering a 30 percent increase in fares.

He emphasized that reducing fuel-related costs would be a more sustainable way to stabilize transport fares and protect commuters from additional financial burden.

While government’s current action stops short of removing the fuel tax, the GH¢2.00 reduction in diesel prices is being seen by some observers as a step in the direction of addressing concerns raised by stakeholders in the transport sector.
